Eaton Fire Survivors and Elected Officials Push for New Recovery Funding
At an October 21 press conference, Eaton Fire survivors joined Assemblymember John Harabedian, Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, and Congresswoman Judy Chu in calling for new state and federal funding to close rebuilding gaps and prevent permanent displacement in Altadena. Proposals include a CA Disaster Investment Fund, federal Disaster Opportunity Zones, and reviving the previously vetoed AB 797 recovery-financing proposal. These measures aim to attract public and private investment for rebuilding homes, affordable housing, infrastructure, and local businesses. Advocates also urged continued pursuit of federal disaster recovery grants. These are proposed funding mechanisms, not yet enacted programs available for applications, and are separate from CA's existing $100M Disaster Rebuilding Assistance Program.
