Join the Dear Newsom Campaign for Fire Survivors

Numerous news outlets covered the July 24 survivor-led press conference at the Collaboratory announcing the launch of the Dear Newsom campaign. The campaign comes as state leaders consider recommendations from a wildfire-liability study required by last year’s SB 254 and administered by the California Earthquake Authority, whose leadership includes longtime insurance-industry executives. Survivors are concerned that those recommendations could be turned into last-minute legislation before the end of the legislative session, without meaningful public review. Eaton Fire survivors joined elected officials, civil-rights leaders, consumer advocates, labor representatives, and community organizations to urge Governor Gavin Newsom to reject closed-door legislation that could reduce utility liability or shift recovery costs onto survivors, policyholders, and customers.

The national coalition, including the NAACP, Public Citizen and other organizations, is calling for full and fair compensation, public legislative debate and accountability for utilities that cause catastrophic fires. Survivors wrote postcards to the governor and described the continuing displacement and financial hardship many families face.
