PUSD Soil Excavation, Tree Dispute Continue as Most Schools Lack Indoor Clearance

Pasadena Unified reports continued contaminated-soil excavation, hauling, clean-fill replacement, and restoration planning at multiple campuses under environmental oversight. The Colorado Boulevard outlet describes a separate dispute between PUSD and the City of Pasadena over protected-tree removals. The city says permits were required and reports issuing stop-work orders and seeking inspection access; PUSD has invoked a statutory zoning exemption, and litigation remains ongoing. The district’s remediation updates and the city’s permitting position should be understood as separate claims.

Meanwhile the vast majority of PUSD schools have yet to receive any indoor scientific clearance. The removal of wildfire debris from the inside of school buildings does not mean the schools have reached safety clearance. Current language in the pending bill AB 1642 would require all schools to reach scientific clearance of lead and asbestos after a fire like Eaton and the Palisades. Such indoor contamination standards as of now do not exist and PUSD has yet to conduct testing for contaminants inside classrooms to ensure campus buildings are safe to occupy and school contents are safe to handle. .
