State Senators Launch Investigation Into California Insurance Department
State Senators Perez and Allen have launched an investigation into the California Department of Insurance following complaints from wildfire survivors who say the department has failed to adequately enforce consumer protections against insurers. Lawmakers are examining whether the department has properly handled complaints related to smoke damage claims, delays, denials, and insurer conduct after recent wildfires, including the Eaton Fire. The inquiry comes amid another LA Times report that State Farm policyholders say state insurance regulators ignored complaints the insurer has tried to close claims without paying them. Frustration continues to grow from survivors who argue that existing laws, including the Unfair Insurance Practices Act, are not being meaningfully enforced, leaving homeowners without timely relief while insurers continue to limit payouts. The Department of Insurance maintains that it is reviewing complaints and working within its legal authority.
