THIS IS A CRUCIAL WEEK for Standing Home Fire Survivors in the State Legislature: 3 Things You Can Do TODAY to Secure a Safe Recovery with EFRU

1. AB 1642 is expected to head to the Appropriations Committee midweek, and we need every possible endorsement in place before then. If you or your organization have not done so yet, please sign on the support letter for AB 1642 by Tuesday, May 5 at 5pm. Only a limited number of bills make it through Appropriations. We need to show the depth of public support behind AB 1642 and make clear that fire survivors need science-based testing and clearance protections now. Please sign on and share this critical push widely.

2. Although AB 1795 directs CalEPA to develop indoor contamination thresholds by 2028, it allows insurers to rely on industry trade standards, including IICRC standards, to decide whether testing is necessary at all. That is the core problem: IICRC-based practices can allow sight-and-smell inspections instead of requiring laboratory testing. AB 1795 also fails to require insurers to presume that hazardous dust found inside a home after an urban wildfire is connected to wildfire debris. If insurers can deny testing before it happens and reject positive test results after the fact, then AB 1795 does not give fire survivors a reliable path to prove contamination, secure remediation, or safely return home. If you have not done so yet, please sign on to oppose AB 1795 by Tuesday 5/5 at 5pm.

3. URGENT CALL TO ACTION Mon 5/4 - Wed 5/6: It’s vital we get the word to the Appropriations Committee to pass AB 1642 and oppose AB 1795. Only a limited number of bills can make it through Appropriations. We need them to understand how detrimental AB 1795 would be to pass and how critical it is for AB 1642 to pass for our safe recovery.
