URGENT THIS WEEK: AB 1642 Needs Your Advocacy: Contact Senate Appropriations Leaders

EFRU urges fire survivors and supporters to contact Senate Appropriations leaders by August 9. Ask them to support AB 1642, which would establish science-based testing, remediation, and safety-clearance standards for wildfire contamination, and to raise serious concerns about AB 1795, which could limit testing and weaken insurance protections for smoke-damage survivors.  The urgency has increased following a recent Senate Insurance Committee analysis describing discussions to include smoke-damage sublimits into AB 1795. If written into law, these limits could cap how much policyholders are able to recover for contamination testing, remediation, repairs, and toxic smoke and ash damage under newly issued or renewed policies.
Action: Call to Action to Support AB 1642 before 8/9 – it takes just 5 minutes. Current CA Insurance Code 2071 calls for insurance policies to cover “all loss by fire”. Passing AB 1642 will help ensure low income, renters, and schools also receive this protection.
