AB 1642 & AB 1795 ARE NOW LAW
Governor Gavin Newsom signed EFRU-sponsored AB 1642 and AB 1795 into law in Altadena on September 14. Together, the laws create CA’s first statewide framework linking wildfire contamination testing, remediation and clearance with corresponding insurance protections. Both take effect January 1, 2027.
And it happened because of YOU.
Whether you signed on to support AB 1642, pushed for critical changes to AB 1795, called or emailed legislators, spoke out on social media, shared with others why these bills mattered, or submitted testing data to EFRU’s map, you helped make this happen.
AB 1642 establishes interim lead and asbestos clearance standards and directs the state to develop broader wildfire-contamination standards and school guidance. AB 1795 adds insurance protections including a rebuttable presumption of wildfire causation, required payment for necessary testing, and ALE protections through restoration and clearance.
EFRU members’ advocacy, testimony and data helped turn these protections into California law. We did it.
