Altadena Arts Magnet Students Return After Parent-Led Safety Push
August 21 — Altadena Arts Magnet students returned to their Calaveras Street campus for the 2026–27 school year after the Eaton Fire displaced the school community. The Pasadena Star-News reports that parents pushed for stronger environmental protections before students returned, leading PUSD to conduct indoor testing for CAM-17 metals, PAHs, particulate matter, and asbestos where applicable. Altadena Arts Magnet was the only PUSD school to receive this level of comprehensive indoor testing before students returned to campus. The district also acknowledged that no formal state or federal requirements currently exist for indoor environmental testing after an urban wildfire. That gap underscores the importance of AB 1642, which would establish statewide, science-based standards for testing wildfire contamination and determining when homes and schools are safe to occupy. The return is an important milestone for families and a reminder of the role sustained parent advocacy played in pushing the district to address post-fire indoor safety concerns.
