Federal Disaster Tax Relief Becomes Law for Eaton Fire Survivors

A bipartisan disaster-tax bill signed September 11 allows qualifying wildfire relief payments, including eligible Eaton Fire settlements, to be excluded from federal taxable income regardless of when they are received. The legislation was led by Sens. Rick Scott and Adam Schiff and Reps. Greg Steube, Mike Thompson and Jimmy Panetta, building on the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa’s longstanding work on disaster tax relief. Rep. Judy Chu also advocated for the measure and its protections for Eaton Fire survivors.

Action: Survivors should consult a qualified tax professional about how the law applies to their individual circumstances.
