New 9/11 Records Reveal the Cost of Declaring Safety Before It Is Proven
CNN reports that more than 170,000 pages of newly released New York City records show officials knew air around Ground Zero was unsafe after 9/11 while publicly reassuring residents and first responders that it was safe. The records include air-quality reports and internal communications documenting widespread toxic contamination; Mayor Zohran Mamdani said asbestos was found nearly everywhere inspectors tested. The release comes as thousands of responders and residents continue to suffer cancers, respiratory disease and other illnesses linked to exposure, and firefighter representatives say officials prioritized reopening Lower Manhattan over protecting public health. The records are especially relevant as EFRU works to advance AB 1642 and AB 1795, which would establish health-and-safety testing standards for standing homes and schools and tie insurance recovery to those protections — helping ensure that future communities are not asked to return before safety has been meaningfully demonstrated.
