Palisades Resident Task Force and EFRU Join NSF Study on Post-Fire Contamination in Standing Homes

The Palisadian Post reports Pacific Palisades residents with standing homes have joined a three-year, federally funded study on post-fire contamination and home safety. The study, titled “FIRE-WUI: Harnessing AI and Engineering Innovation for Post-Fire Property Decontamination and Economic Recovery,” is funded by three National Science Foundation grants totaling $1.32 million and involves researchers from Tufts University, Purdue University, and UCLA. Researchers are examining the uncertainty faced by residents whose homes survived the fire but may still be affected by toxic ash, soot, char, debris, and contamination. The project aims to help residents understand inconsistent environmental sampling reports, identify gaps in current testing methods, analyze more than 1,200 anonymized environmental reports, and eventually build an AI tool that future disaster survivors can use to interpret post-fire contamination concerns. The article also highlights EFRU’s finding that six in 10 remediated homes still showed unacceptable levels of contaminants, including lead and asbestos, underscoring why better post-fire testing, remediation standards, and scientific guidance are needed for standing-home survivors. EFRU has also joined this NSF study. Stay tuned for more information.
