PUSD Community Message: Restoring Outdoor Spaces

Pasadena Unified School District sent a community message stating that it is moving forward this summer with restoration of outdoor learning spaces at 11 campuses and district sites impacted by the Eaton Fire. PUSD says the work is being conducted under DTSC direction and will remove fire-related contaminants impacting soil and trees while students and staff are off campus. PUSD also says some replacement work may occur while students are on site, because that later work would not involve exposure to fire-related soil. EFRU supports the remediation of contaminated soil on school campuses, but it is still unclear why trees must be removed.

The 11 listed sites are Blair High School, the former Cleveland Elementary School site, Field Elementary, the Franklin Elementary site, Jefferson Dual Language Children’s Center, John Muir High School Early College Magnet, Longfellow Elementary Magnet, Octavia E. Butler Magnet, San Rafael Elementary, Washington Elementary STEM Magnet School, and the PUSD Education Center. PUSD states that DTSC reviewed and conditionally approved eight Fire-Related Campus Assessment Reports and three Removal Action Workplans, and that records can be found through DTSC EnviroStor by searching the school name.
