TODAY: Tell Senate Appropriations Leaders to Pass AB 1642

Today, Monday, August 10, is the day to act. EFRU urges every fire survivor, supporter, and community partner to contact Senate Appropriations leaders and ask them to move AB 1642 forward at Thursday’s August 13 Suspense hearing.

AB 1642 would establish independent, science-based standards for wildfire contamination testing, remediation, and safety clearance. Those standards are urgently needed because AB 1795 is an insurance bill—not a public-health standard—and in the interim continues to allow reliance on IICRC practices that can evaluate contamination through sight and smell until state environmental standards are developed. This is unacceptable. EFRU’s post-remediation data found that 6 out of 10 homes tested remained unsafe to inhabit after insurance-directed lead remediation. A home cannot be declared safe simply because wildfire is wiped up.
