Attorney General Launches Civil Rights Probe Into Eaton Fire Response in West Altadena
On Thursday, February 12th California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced he is launching a civil rights investigation into the emergency response to the 2025 Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County. The probe will examine whether emergency preparedness, evacuation notices, or response actions in the historically Black community of West Altadena lagged behind those in other areas due to race, age, or disability discrimination, potentially violating state civil rights and disability laws. The Eaton Fire burned more than 14,000 acres, destroyed thousands of structures, and resulted in at least 19 deaths. The investigation follows sustained advocacy from Altadena for Accountability, which has petitioned the Attorney General for months to initiate an inquiry.
