The CalAssist Mortgage Fund: Forbearance Becomes 12 Months of Forgivable Mortgage Payments

The CalAssist Mortgage Fund has expanded its disaster mortgage-relief program to provide eligible homeowners up to 12 months of mortgage payments that do not need to be repaid, paid directly to the mortgage servicer. Households that previously received three months of assistance can receive additional support to reach a full year. The expansion also raises income limits to $281,400 in Los Angeles County. Assistance is available whether homeowners are current, in forbearance, or behind on payments. Eligibility requires that the applicant’s primary residence was destroyed or deemed uninhabitable due to a qualified disaster between 01/01/2023 and 01/08/2025, the applicant meets the income limits, has a mortgage or reverse mortgage, and owns only one qualifying property (single-family home, condo, or permanently affixed manufactured home, up to 4 units).
