Final Week: Fire Survivors Mobilize Against Proposed Utility-Liability Changes

With the legislative session nearing its end, fire survivors and consumer advocates are continuing to push back against proposals that could reduce the financial liability of investor-owned utilities after catastrophic wildfires. Every Fire Survivor’s Network and Consumer Watchdog are organizing survivor participation in Sacramento on August 24–25, along with calls and remote advocacy for those who cannot travel. EFSN is also circulating a survivor-focused alternative proposal and financial analysis arguing that California can address utility solvency without reducing wildfire victims’ ability to recover their losses. The debate comes as newly released evidence about the Eaton Fire raises additional questions about Southern California Edison’s maintenance and safety practices before the fire.
