Kathryn Barger’s Oval Office Op-Ed Frames Altadena as a Federal Recovery Test
In an op-ed published online by AOL, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger describes the ongoing recovery crisis facing Altadena more than a year after the Eaton Fire. Barger makes a much-needed and urgent argument that recovery is still being constrained by underpayment, debt, insurance problems, mortgage-company barriers, and the lack of federal financial support thus far for a disaster of this magnitude. Citing survivor survey data, she notes that 7 out of 10 residents remain displaced, with many families financially strained and without the means to return.
Barger also recounts raising these concerns directly with President Trump in the Oval Office, where she says he expressed support for helping LA County secure federal recovery support and pressure insurers to pay what they owe. While she welcomes that support, Barger stresses that presidential backing alone is not enough. She argues that Congress must act urgently to provide the funding and policy response needed for Altadena and other disaster-impacted communities, framing the issue as a bipartisan responsibility rather than a local or partisan concern.
The article is useful less for new facts than for how it frames Altadena’s needs directly to Congress and the White House. However, Barger does not address the significant contamination caused by the Eaton Fire or the resources needed for a safe recovery of the community.
