San Francisco Chronicle Wins Pulitzer Prize for Home Insurance Investigation

The SF Chronicle won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting for its Burned investigation into how major insurers handled wildfire claims. The series exposed internal practices and systems that helped insurers reduce or deny payouts after fires, validating many of the concerns fire survivors have raised about delay, underpayment, and claims-handling barriers. EFRU is deeply grateful to Susie Neilson, Sara DiNatale, Megan Munce, and their editor for their sustained dedication to LA fire survivors over the past year. Their reporting has been critical in bringing our struggles to the attention of state legislators who have worked tirelessly to support us, especially at a time when so many survivors have been failed by a lack of government infrastructure, oversight, and accountability. We are thrilled to see their work and commitment to our recovery recognized with such well-deserved distinction.
